Employment Type Full-Time
We are looking for a Product Development Engineer to help us expand our next-generation laser processing product portfolio.
Opsydia is transforming security and traceability in the diamond gemstone industry with its precision laser technology. Our first deployed products utilise optical techniques to write internal IDs inside diamonds, supporting traceability initiatives for ethical supply chains.
Our technology also provides a platform for next-generation functional devices in diamond. In the research and development stage it has a number of potential disruptive applications, from quantum devices to chemical and magnetic sensors.
THE ROLE
As a Product Development Engineer you will contribute to the development of Opsydia’s product portfolio of optical systems. This is a creative systems and product design role, which includes involvement in initial R&D for new product ideas, problem solving for product improvements and value engineering of end-user products. This is a broad role enabling you to be involved in projects from initial idea to product deployment.
In particular, you will:-
Design, build and test optical systems for high resolution imaging or laser processing
Integrate electrical, mechanical and optical components for R&D experimentation
Closely collaborate with Systems Engineers and Mechanical Design Engineers to translate technical requirements into product design concepts
Clearly communicate and document product design requirements and constraints
Think creatively about innovative ways to solve engineering problems
Be a driving force for turning complex ideas into simple engineering solutions
ABOUT YOU
You will have a strong technical background with a degree, or equivalent experience in the physical sciences or engineering and enjoy working as part of a small collaborative team. The ideal candidate would have a practical approach to product development and enthusiasm for simplifying complex systems into pragmatic, cost-effective engineering solutions.
You will be able to demonstrate that you have the following:-
A degree or equivalent experience in a technical field
A hands-on approach to understanding the problems our products aim to solve
An ability to understand important constraints on complex R&D systems, for translation into cost-effective manufacturable product designs
Confidence using 3D CAD software to view prototypes and product designs
Knowledge of some different manufacturing techniques and their suitability for various products of different production volumes
A collaborative approach to product development, working with Product, Systems and Production Engineering teams
You may also have:-
Experience working with or designing optical systems or complex instruments
Significant experience in a early-stage startup or with small collaborative teams
Experience with electronic or electrical assemblies
An interest in user experience and product aesthetics
Enthusiasm for user interface design
A strong focus on organisation and documentation
These roles are advertised as full-time, however part-time would be considered at a minimum of 0.8fte. We are pleased to accommodate flexible and hybrid working where appropriate but, as a hardware company, we find hands-on system and collaboration time to be highly valuable, so encourage time spent in the office and expect this when required.
As part of the recruitment process a selected candidate will be required to undergo security screening to BS7858.
Closing date: 3rd February 2023. Applications will be reviewed as received so this vacancy may be closed earlier; early applications are therefore encouraged.
