Job: Technical Manager

Salary: £32,000 - £40,000 DOE
My client is looking for a Technical Manager to join their business on a permanent basis in Wolverhampton. You'll be responsible for the operational control of the laboratory, the technical team, effluent treatment plant and hazardous waste disposal. As the technical manager you’re also responsible for managing the existing process chemistry of the electroplating, cleaning, phosphating, dip spin plants, implementing, introducing new processes and technology.
Duties and responsibilities:
  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following,
  • Operational control of the Laboratory.
  • Managing the existing process chemistry of the plating, phosphating and cleaning plants.
  • Operational control over the effluent treatment and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Liaising with management, individual departments, and staff with regards to specification compliance and special processes compliance.
  • Liaising with the Quality Manager and certification bodies, to ensure continued compliance with ISO 14001 and IATF16949 Standards.
  • Identifying root causes and corrective actions to answer both internal and external non-conformances.
  • Identifying non-conformances, gaps and corrective actions using Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). Then, if required liaising with clients and prime customers, to ensure compliance to requirements and required concessions.
  • Liaising with clients and prime customers, to amend or write specifications to meet specific operating demands.
  • Liaising with regulatory bodies, such as the Health and Safety Executive, Environment Agency, European Chemicals Agency, Local Authorities and Emergency Services in the absence of The HSE & Technical Support Manager.
  • Occasional absence cover for team members to cover holidays and sickness.
  • The generation of process control plans to meet specific client and specification requirements.
  • Oversee the daily analysis of process chemistry and effluent treatment discharge to ensure compliance to customer, regulatory and internal company requirements.
  • Day to day stock control of base and proprietary chemicals. and liaise with suppliers to ensure process materials are received in a timely manner
  • Direct management responsibility for a small technical team.
  • Working alongside the Quality Manager and colleagues to resolve technical issues.
Skills and Experience
  • An understanding of Non-Destructive Testing would be desirable.
  • Background in analytical chemistry, with the ability to interpret results quickly and make corrections to processes. Previous use of automated titration equipment would be an advantage.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Minimum of 5 years in a similar role.
  • Have an understanding of Electroplating, Conversion Coatings, Primers and Paints.
  • Ideally have an understanding of IATF 16949, ISO9001, ISO14001 and Health, and Safety Law and the Industrial Emissions Directive (including COSHH and
  • Effective Time Management.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Able to work alone and as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of effluent treatment plant and the importance of complying with Consents to Discharge
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, on an occasional basis, essential
  • Individual who enjoys working in laboratories and in an industrial environment as well as writing reports and record keeping.
  • Ideally a Degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or Applied Sciences
  • Must be computer literate, Excel, office, word, outlook.
  • Problem solving abilities are essential.
  • Attention to detail.
Working Hours:
Mon – Friday 8am – 5pm plus occasional weekends when the need arises
